How to Start a Women’s Prayer Breakfast at your Church

Learn how to start a women’s breakfast at your church with simple planning tips, fellowship ideas, and encouragement to build a welcoming community for women of faith.

Do you feel called to begin another avenue for women’s fellowship at your church? Are you itching for a way to contribute to women’s ministry? Do you enjoy serving the women in your congregation or community?

I have a great and simple idea for you: A weekly women’s breakfast.

A weekly women’s devotional/prayer breakfast creates an opportunity for the women in your community to gather before the busyness of the upcoming day. Prayer requests are shared, Scripture truths are taught, and Christian community is enhanced.

I know, I know. You hear the idea of starting a brand new group-style ministry and it seems daunting. But I promise you, it can be kept super simple. I know this because I’ve done this very thing at my church!

What you will need to start a women’s breakfast ministry:

  • A location for women to gather – ideally a location that has a kitchen (we use the kitchen/dining room at my church)
  • Food supplies such as eggs, bacon, biscuits, coffee (my church supplies breakfast foods to be cooked – see if your church can do this, or ask for donations!)
  • Women eager to attend and/or contribute to teaching

That’s it. That is the entire “supply” list. Now, what are the steps to actually put in place a weekly women’s breakfast? There are 4 simple steps to this:

Step 1: Coordinate timing and food supplies with your Church leaders/elders.

This step was simple for me because the size of my church is fairly small, which creates a very casual atmosphere for planning new ministries. I was able to chat with my pastor about the idea, he gave some ideas on which day and times would likely work best, and he directed me to the person who could make grocery orders for our breakfast food needs.

Step 2: Create a monthly schedule for devotional leaders.

If you are involved with the women of your church (which you should be if you are wanting to start a women’s ministry), then you are likely familiar with who has the right qualities for leading/teaching. Choose 3-5 women who are willing to take turns leading a short devotional/study at breakfast. To keep it organized, I suggest writing each week’s leader on your calendar. I normally plan the weekly leaders about a month ahead of time.

Step 3: Announce the breakfast to your congregation.

This step is simple: tell people! Make an announcement one Sunday morning, write the information in the church bulletin, or post it on the church social media. I have found that women yearn for more fellowship opportunities and they will be excited to hear of a new ministry in your church.

Step 4: Cook the breakfast & enjoy the fellowship!

On the morning of the women’s breakfast, I show up early to cook the breakfast and start the coffee. This time allows me to serve the women of my congregation and pray for the upcoming fellowship. After cooking the breakfast, I arrange it so that the women can walk in and make themselves a plate. As we sit down to eat, the leader of the week gives a brief (20 minutes) teaching/devotional/study. We then enjoy time discussing the topic introduced by the leader and we also share prayer requests we each other.

Beginning a women’s breakfast at your church does not have to be daunting. In fact, it can be simple and stress-free. I have deeply enjoyed the opportunity of organizing the women’s breakfast at my church. It has been a blessing to serve in this capacity. I hope you take some of these ideas and begin a women’s breakfast within your church. Fellowship among Christian women is imperative for our churches!
